Congratulations
Well done to Garden News, the weekly national publication brimful of useful info for gardening enthusiasts and keen exhibitors, for adding another top writer to their team. Carol Gubler will now alternate with stalwart George Bartlett to add another fresh dimension to the weekly fuchsia section. Congratulation to Carol. I for one am really looking forward to her contributions which will be, without doubt, written with great enthusiasm. Carol has been guest speaker at our society and is of course well know to us for her work with the BFS. She is presently the BFS Assistant Secretary, Area Representative for Kent, Surrey, Sussex and the South East and Organiser of the London Show. She is loved by all Society Newsletter editors, particularly for being part of the set-up that compiles and distributes the CAD's Fuchsia News. This is the quarterly BFS publication compiled by Carol, Arthur Phillips and Derek Luther with material for the affiliated societies to incorporate into their own publications. Besides all that Carol somehow still finds time to run a local Guide Unit and, oh yes, run her own nursery 'Little Brook Fuchsias' near Aldershot. As they say, if you want to get a job done, ask a busy person. Good Luck Carol - keep up the good work!
Fuchsia's Nut Timely Tip
My latest trick for keeping fuchsia roots cool in buckets and baskets. I now dunk newspaper in a bucket till it is thoroughly wet and then line the inside of the buckets and baskets with a thick lining of this. It works a treat! Even my succulent tubs were lined in this way. They look so much better than when the paper was wrapped around the outside of the pots, although I have to say it did keep the sun off the roots of my fuchsias nearly as well. Planted in this new way are strawberries, lobelia, most of the fuchsias in 20 ltr tubs and of course the succulents. There are a few 'greenies' farmers telling me that the newsprint will do unspeakable damage to the plants and soil and the environment, but so far no evidence to support these gloomy predictions. It is going to be a really hot summer, so a few risks are in order don't you think? Heather - courtesy of the National Fuchsia Society of New Zealand's National Link, November 2000
