Other Top Ten basket favourites were Auntie Jinks, Border Queen, Daisy Bell, Derby Imp, Ernie Bromley, Harry Gray, Hermiena, Jack Shahan, La Campanella, Marinka, Multa, Pres. Margaret Sater, Shelford, Susan Green, Swingtime.  It is especially nice to see good old Marinka, nearly a century old now, still holding its own!
So, if you want to be a winner, you ought to consider those. But, over the years some really stunning baskets have been produced with less popular cultivars and those baskets (and hanging pots) have always ended up being  the real much talked about show stoppers, so it can pay to be different too.  Varieties falling into this category were triphyllas such as Trumpeter, Leverhulme & Chantry Park, the colourful, variegated Tom West, Brutus, Devonshire Dumpling, Waveney Sunrise, Cascade, Lillian Annetts and Sir Matt Busby (remember the superb row of basket at Harlow Car!).
After our fabulous display at the Lincoln Millennium Fuchsia Festival I think we can definitely add
Pink Panther, President George Bartlett and Bertha Gadsby to the list of eye-catching, trailing varieties to grow.  CD

The Fuchsia Growers Prayer

The horse and mare live 30 years
and do not know of wines and beers.
The goats and sheep at 20 die and never taste a scotch or rye.
The cow drinks water by the ton at 15 life is almost done.
A dog at 14 years packs in without the aid of rum or gin.
The modest, sober, bone - dry hen lays eggs for years and dies at 10.
But sinful, ginful fuchsia men survive till three score years and ten.
But some of us, the mighty few stay pickled till we're 92 !

BFS Fuchsia Lore Club
by Peter Holloway, Secretary.

Following details in last year's publications, and the formation of the above when 28 founding members from 19 households attended the inaugural meeting, membership has increased beyond all my expectations, and at the end of its first year, membership stands at 172 members from 137 households plus 2 overseas societies and 20 overseas members, comprising 12 from USA, 4 Australia, 1 New Zealand, 1 South Africa, 1 Germany, 1 Austria, 1 Belgium and 1 Holland.
We have held very successful meetings, with attendances on the up, fortunately the venue at Stafford does have room for growth, but judging by the increasing numbers attending, we may soon require a larger hall! We have had members attending from as far afield as Inverness in Scotland and Falmouth in Cornwall, plus two overseas visitors who made the journey from Southern Germany and have already told us they will be attending again. The meetings are for the members, who are able to bring items from their own collections to discuss and show to others, added to this we have been fortunate to have "guest" speakers giving an insight into how they produce various fuchsia related items.
The group was able to offer three discounted fuchsia pieces during the year, and are always looking for new and different items. At the last meeting the design for the new badge was accepted, thanks to Jane Oke for her efforts. It is hoped these will be available to purchase at the B.F. S. Annual General Meeting in March.
Three fuchsia lore newsletters have been produced and have been very well received, covering items brought to the meetings to keep those unable to attend informed.
The popularity of the club continues to thrive, interested parties should contact the Secretary, Peter Holloway, 85 Rutland Crescent, Trowbridge, Wiltshire BA14 ONX for further details. Please enclose s.a.e.
