My favourite Fuchsia is a large white double cultivar, introduced in 1978 by Dr. Andrew Ryle from Northumbria and released by Fuchsiavale Nurseries of Kidderminster. It was named after the wife of a Carlisle grower and exhibitor Norman Mitchinson. Norman grew all of Andrew Ryle's seedlings to asses their potential - and then recommended to Fuchsiavale which were the best cultivars for release commercially. This cultivar was awarded the BFS Award of Merit and First Class Certificate. The BFS Seedling Committee certainly got this one right as it is excellent. Listed in Nursery catalogues as upright I have seen it exhibited in all classes on the show bench, it makes a large full basket, an even better half basket, an excellent bush and a beautiful fan. But the best way to show this wonderful fuchsia is as standard. My favourite fuchsia, the only one it is reputed that I can grow by my friends at North Worcs. is ANNABEL! For those who do not know the cultivar - it is a large white double with light green foliage and is best described as a lax bush. When exhibiting I won all my major trophies with this excellent plant grown as a half or full standard. Courtesy of the BFS CADs Fuchsia News January 1999
It Still Isn't Coming Out Right!!! by Angela Lee - Huddersfield
I have a favourite plant food. I use from day to day, It comes in many 'varieties', Each with a part to play In growing my favourite flower, Numbers 2-3-4 or 6, It has many pronunciations, Which have right put me in a fix! I go to many Fuchsia Societies' Far away and near to home, They all seem to have the same problem, Wherever I care to roam. I decided to write to the company, Straight to the horse's mouth, To decide just how I should say it, As the problem's East, West, North and South. Chempak as in chemical they told me, Not chocolate or shed is right, Our Chempak has a 'K' sound, Will you now sleep better at night? So simple was their explanation, How come I didn't work it out? We all know that plant foods are chemicals, So why do I still have to shout? Chempak as chemist, chaos and chemical, Not chair, chew, chalk or cheese, Nor shed, shove, shoot or shambles, How could it be any of these? Please be kind and pass on the message, I first gave out in ninety-five, Five long years' thereafter, It still isn't coming out right!!!!!!!
