New introductions for 2001

Fuchsia enthusiasts like to be amongst the first to try out new cultivars and to whet your appetite we have listed below a resume of the new releases from our 'local' specialist fuchsia nurseries. Please note that the descriptions given are quoted from their catalogues hence it is all glowing. However, I do consider the Oxtobys and the Muncasters great judges of good potential, being at the forefront of many impressive introductions over the years, so their hunches are bound to be well worth following!
Many a fuchsia introduced with great gusto has swiftly disappeared from the scene again. Others gathered up many a red card for in the first year of release and have gone on to become firm favourites on the show benches. So, you'll never know until you have tried and this year's selection certainly looks like having some potential show stoppers amongst them!

1 Eileen Storey (Storey 2001) Erect single flower. Short tube white. Sepals white edged red and flushed green. The underside shows more green especially when grown in the shade. Petals purple with white base. Many buds to each leaf axil so flowers over a long period. A definite improvement on its ancestor Estelle Marie as it grows in the winter and the foliage stays an even mid green with no unsightly mottling.
2 Harlow Perfection (Johns 2001) Single semi-erect flower. Short tube pale pink. Fully up recurved sepals are white tipped green. Petals pale lilac. Very floriferous, bushy and even growing. Has attracted some attention and favourable comment.
3 Patio King (Johns 2001) Very floriferous and long flowering single. Exceptionally sturdy growth and makes a superb plant in a tub for the patio or as a short standard. Tube is short and pink. White sepals are edged and flushed pink and tipped green. Rose petals are edged bright red.
4 Polmont Pride (Lewis 2001) Semi-double to double. Short tube bright red. Slightly upturned sepals red. Petals clear white veined cerise. Floriferous. Its lax growth and bushy habit shows well in hanging pots or small baskets.
5 Scarlet Cascade (Bielby/Oxtoby 2001) Stunning large long tubed single. Tube orange-red, sepals deeper and held horizontal. Petals deep bright orange-red, lighter at base. Needs tight pinching and if allowed to flower too early the branches will be too long. Incredible flower power which will continue all summer and autumn:
6 Sharonelle (Wilkinson 2001) Small semi-erect single. Very short tube pink. Upswept sepals white edged pink, tipped green. Corolla very pale lilac. As you would expect from one of Mal's it really shows the flowers well on an even growing, bushy plant. Superb for small pot work but don't pinch too hard.

Berys (L. Greenway 2001) This plant makes a super hanging pot that flowers over a long period. Strong pink sepals that arch just above the horizontal. The corolla is very pale pink with a nice line of stronger pink on each petal edge, a combination that makes the flower stand out. It should make this a sure winner at show and in general use.
Look North (M. Hall 2001) The strong growth and nice habit make this fine plant show its flowers off to perfection. Red sepals which arch back to the tube as the flower ages, a purple corolla with very strong red highlights and shading that give the flower a lot of colour depth.

Remember that specialist fuchsia nurseries do an excellent job to ensure that a very wide range of fuchsia cultivars stay in existence.                       continued on next page
